The Fossilised Forest of Dunarobba (La Foresta Fossile di Dunarobba)The Fossilised Forest of Dunarobba in the Basin Tiberino is made up of well-preserved tree trunks fossilised two million years ago. The forest, covering 3 hectares, is comprised of more than 50 trunks, some measuring up to 8 metres high. Discovered in the 1970s, it is now a protected site, however the trunks are now under threat from a species of hornet that deposits it larvae into the trunks where it feeds on the fossilised wood.
Lake TrasimenoLake Trasimeno is the largest lake in the Italian Peninsula south of the Po River. Surrounded by the hills of Umbria, the towns surrounding the lake are the setting for many events and festivals. The lake has three islands, of which only Isola Maggiore, the second-largest island, is inhabited. Only about 30 people reside on Isola Maggiore but in spring and summer it's a popular tourist destination. Lake Trasimeno is quite shallow, but rich with fish and marine life. During warmer weather the lake is a popular spot for fishing, boating, sailing and water sports. Frequent ferry services operate from around Easter through September from: Castiglione del Lago to Isola Maggiore; Passignano to Castiglione del Lago; and San Feliciano to Isola Polvese. Ferry service ends at 19:00. Wine Route: Torgiano to MontefalcoUmbria is well known for its food and wine, with three main wine routes around Umbria offering visitors the opportunity to learn about and taste the local wines. The three wine routes are the:
Most wineries are open to the public, however it is suggested to make a reservation in advance to ensure that a tour and/or tasting is available. The Cantico Route winds through Torgiano, Marsciano, Perugia, Todi, Bettona, Cannara, Spello and Assisi. Themed tours (often based around local food and art) are available from various operators and special wine-based events take place throughout the year.
The Etruscan-Roman Route follows a course through the hills around Orvieto and Amelia which are peppered with olive-oil mills, vineyards, castles and other historic buildings. Wine-based events take place throughout the year. Orvieto prides itself on it's status as a "Slow City" (cittįslow), with locally-grown foods and wines featuring prominently on local tables. Vineyards on the route produce traditional DOC (Denominazione Origine Controllata) wines as well as the controversal IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) wines. IGT wines contain foreign varieties of grape to be added to the wine, whereas DOC wines do not.
The Sagrantino Route gets its name from Sagrantino, a grape variety grown on Montefalco's slopes. The route winds through the area around Bevagna, Montefalco, Castel Ritaldi, Giano dell'Umbria and Gualdo Cattaneo.
